Advanced Semiconductor and Mixed-technology Automation by Unovis Solutions

The traditional manufacturing definitions between semiconductor assembly and board level assembly have dissolved. Unovis delivers versatile solutions for the convergence of packaging and SMT, offering precision and efficiency in applications which include, but are not limited to: system-in-package, multi-chip-module, flip chip on flex, stacked packages. Unique flexible assembly cells can perform multiple functions: dispense, gang flux or paste dipping, high accuracy and high speed placement, curing, and inspection, as well as high speed die and component feeding. Call us to see video of many of these processes in action.

Our specialized applications engineers wrap these advanced capabilities around your application requirements for flexible, space-efficient, and cost effective assembly that can quickly change as your product and assembly requirements do. Odd Form & Final Assembly Automation by Unovis Solutions

Unovis brings customizable, platform-based assembly processes which may have been out of reach to automation in the past because they were too complex, or required too high a dedicated investment in custom equipment. Unovis Polaris and Polaris Jr. assembly cells offer an unprecedented mix of capabilities which can easily be combined in one work cell, such as: dispensing, pick and Place, driving screws, vision inspection, OCR inspection, bar code scanning, labeling, clinching, packaging, laser marking, laser height detection, testing and special application handling. Polaris can also communicate with your IT systems to help control inventories, track product serial and lot numbers, or serve other product information storage requirements as your product is being assembled on the production line.

Standard tool interface allows Polaris to be a platform across multiple work cell needs. The cell can be easily retooled at end of product life, reducing total cost of ownership and maximizing ROI.

Unovis Advanced Research in Elecronics Assembly Consortium

The Unovis Advanced Process Laboratory has been the home of world-renowned consortia providing research & technology excellence for over 17 years. All research is performed at the Unovis Laboratory. Active participation is encouraged, but is not a requirement for membership. Research topics are those common to most manufacturers and that directly impact profitability. The 2008 AREA Consortium is focused on critical aspects of SnPb, “backward compatible” and Pb-Free solder based assembly and rework. We continue to study PCB manufacturing defects and damage in assembly and repair while continuing to update and expand an online database detailing the performance of specific materials and designs in Pb-free assembly and repair. Flip chip reliability studies emphasize SAC and SnCu solders, the compatibility of underfill materials with either, and their associated fluxes.

2008 Topics

  • Fine Pitch Flip Chip, F2F & TSV
  • System in a Package (SiP)
  • Thermally Dense Assembly
  • Package on Package (PoP)
  • Leadless Assemblies (MLF, QFN, LCC & LGA)
  • Large FCBGAs
  • Wave and Selective Soldering - Cu dissolution in Pb-Free, high-layer-count board issues
  • Rework & Repair
  • Lead-Free HASL
  • Component Underfilling
  • Thermal Interface Assembly
  • PCB Damage
  • Cratering
  • Solder Pad Finish Issues (Sporadic Joint Fragility) - Voiding in Cu3Sn, ‘Missing Ball’ or Brittle Failure on Ni
  • Mechanical Reliability & Test Protocols- Underfill and Solder mask Damage, Cratering and Other Pad Failures, Intermetallic Bonds, Solder, Testing, Testing Protocols, Substitution of Tests
  • Power Cycling
  • Early Failure
  • Solderless Interconnects
  • Practical Deliverables

Benefits of Consortium Membership

  • For less cost than that of a single employee you will benefit from millions of dollars of advanced process research and experimentation.
  • Every dollar received from membership is applied to the consortium effort.
  • All research is performed by the Unovis Advanced Process Laboratory. Research topics are those common to most manufacturers and that directly impact profitability.
  • Membership includes all information produced through previous consortiums provided in CD format.
  • One Membership fee allows all your company locations to participate.
  • Active participation is your option. While we recommend active participation wherever possible, you will receive comprehensive results and project details even if you cannot attend.
  • You are invited to "camp-out" at the laboratory if you wish at no extra cost. Active participation is a great way to get the most from your membership.
  • Interaction and networking with other industry experts facing common challenges.
  • Project results and details are distilled into comprehensive process manuals that can be immediately utilized by you and your organization. Research data is compiled into a searchable database for easy retrieval.

If you are facing new technology challenges or preparing for future designs and are not yet familiar with the Consortium, we welcome you to contact Creyr or the Unovis Advanced Process Laboratory to discuss how membership could benefit your current projects and the future of your organization.
